Permanent stainless steel crowns are required in cases where a permanent molar tooth is badly broken down and not suitable for treatment with a filling. This can happen if the tooth has a very large cavity, a root canal treatment or if the tooth did not form properly. Permanent stainless steel crowns will need to be replaced by a permanent crown, once the patient is old enough to have a permanent crown placed.
