Sealant Fissure sealants are a plastic coating placed on the biting surface of molars which are used to reduce the chances of decay on these surfaces. Fissure sealants are most effective when applied to a newly erupted tooth, (a tooth that has just come into the mouth) as these teeth do not have all the minerals needed to protect themselves from decay. At Nuala Cagney Dental Practice, we are very particular about our sealants, but fissure sealants can chip or break over time, thus once placed, we will check them at the 6 monthly check-up appointments.
